THE Wall of Sound
The Guinness World Record sound system In 1974. The 'Wall of Sound', maintaining perfect quality a quarter of a mile from the stage. The set-up, however, cost $480,000 dollars and was too difficult to dismantle and transport. (I counted 19 Tractor Trailer Trucks loaded with the Wall of Sound.) They retired the rig after 37 shows. It was the creation of audio engineer Owsley "Bear" Stanley.
"The Wall of Sound is the name some people gave to a super powerful, extremely accurate PA system that I designed and supervised the building of in 1973 for the Grateful Dead. It was a massive wall of speaker arrays set behind the musicians, which they themselves controlled without a front of house mixer. It did not need any delay towers to reach a distance of half a mile from the stage without degradation" ~ Owsley Stanley.
The Wall of Sound fulfilled Owsley's desire for a distortion-free sound system that could also serve as its own monitoring system. Weighed over 70 tons. 586 JBL speakers and 54 Electro-Voice tweeters powered by 48 McIntosh MC-2300 Monoblock Amps 48 × 600 = 28,800 watts. Sectioned to be played behind but Controlled by each performer serving as each musicians monitor, It stood over three-stories tall and stretched nearly 100 feet wide When we were arriving, heard the sound check almost a mile away clearly & cleanly. The Grateful Dead Played for 6 hours with one 15 minute break. I was sitting Stage Right about 8 rows in. The 1st announcement they made was, Please don't throw frisbees at the speakers...

See you next year...
"It's been great...see you next year." -Phil Lesh (after GDTRFB)
Or not. Heh.
It's a shame that there were so many issues with the soundboard audio for the first set. Not sure why, but when the audio is balanced, it sounds great.

A top 5 of 74
One of my personal favorites of '74. Monster 3-set performance. I have often wondered (and have not yet been able to confirm) if this Wharf Rat here is the lone version which ends without going direcly into another song. It is quite a solid version, and then they tune up before going into GDTRFB.
Other standouts are a fantastic 29 minute Playin' that includes some very cool electronics (which are also used later to funk things up a bit in Truckin') and then the Eyes>Big River is your combination of the evening -- 5-stars, great show.

Truckin'>Jam
of course the Eyes and China Cat at this show are very fine, though i think there are far better in '74 - like 6/18 (eyes) or 5/25 (china).
as another reviewer said, of special mention tho is the jam following Truckin' - it's not quite 6/28, but it is a very special and unique jam as far as i know - containing many themes (named and unnamed) including Nobody's Fault and the Mind Left Body jams. as usual in '74 phil carries this one to some wicked heights...jaw dropping stuff, one of my very favorite moments of this great great year.

I was there.
I was at this show. A guy died from bad acid while waiting for the gates to open.
It was a beautiful June day. Big puffy white clouds marched across the sky all afternoon. When a cloud covered the sun, the band would go into a modal scale. The crowd would all sit down and the dancing would nearly cease. Then the Sun would come back out and the band would switch back into a 12 tone scale. The crowd would rise back up and the dancing would begin again. This went on all afternoon. It was almost like the band was playing the crowd.
So, I am a newbie here. Do I download all the files? I can't seem to stream it.
Thanks.

My first live show!!
I'd really like to get a copy of this show. I was 14 and went with my brothers and friends. As the little tag-along brother I soon found myself roaming around on my own. I was familiar with the Dead's music and was excited to at my first concert... which turned out to be my first GD show.
I need a miracle?
Peace, Layne

No Ned...
I think Keith was just getting experimental at this show, and playing a Fender Rhodes, which sounds just great. I love what he does with simple songs like Deal and Ship of Fools with the Fender during this era.

I recommend adding this show to your 1974 GRATEFUL DEAD collection.
5 stars for the mix
5 stars for the recording
5 stars for the performance
Billy is having a ball at this show, he's layin' down different grooves on Bertha, IKYR, etc.
That could be Ned. I don't recall anyone else with that "sound" play'n with the GRATEFUL DEAD back then other than Ned Lagin (pronounced lay-gin).
It would be a treat to have a show with Ned in it. Ned was from M.I.T. and Brandeis University. He's the keyboard player that got away...and lived.
It would be nice to know who is playing keyboards, because it sure doesn't sound like Keith and it doesnt' sound like Ned.
Ned was never "the keyboard player" for the GRATEFUL DEAD. So, I doubt it's him. So who could it be???
Get it while you can, get it while it's free, get it now or you'll be sorry...
Eat, Drink, Be Merry and Listen to the GRATEFUL DEAD.
Thanks for the Love.

Playin'
My favorite Playin' of all time. Ultra fucking spacy, as if the UFOs had touched down in some Iowa cornfield. Is Ned Lagin at this show or something?
